St. Luke's Hospital has been recognized as one of America's 50 Best HospitalsTM by HealthGrades®, the nation's leading independent healthcare ratings company. The designation recognizes hospitals that have demonstrated superior clinical quality over a seven-year time period, based upon an analysis of tens of millions of Medicare patient records from 1999-2005. These hospitals have achieved better survival rates and lower complication rates across dozens of medical procedures and diagnoses, from cardiac care to orthopedic surgery, consistently ranking among the top five percent in the nation for overall clinical outcomes.
In October 2007, a HealthGrades study of hospital quality in America identified St. Luke's Hospital among the top performers in a wide variety of clinical specialties. According to the HealthGrades study, St. Luke's is:
- Rated best in the St. Louis area for spine surgery
- Rated best in the St. Louis area for pulmonary services such as treatment of pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Rated among the Top 3 hospitals in Missouri for cardiac care for the second consecutive year
The Tenth Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study identifies key trends in the quality of care provided by approximately 5,000 hospitals nationwide. HealthGrades researchers analyzed Medicare discharges from every U.S. hospital between 2004 and 2006. Risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates were calculated and hospitals were assigned a 1-star (poor), 3-star (as expected), or 5-star (best) quality rating for 28 diagnoses and procedures from heart failure to hip replacement to pneumonia.
St. Luke's received 5-star ratings for the treatment of heart failure and for stroke care for the fifth consecutive year. Patients admitted to the nation's top-performing hospitals with multiple five-star ratings such as St. Luke's, have average mortality rates that are 71 percent lower than those treated at one-star rated hospitals across 18 procedures and conditions, according to the study.
In 2005 and 2006, St. Luke's was named a Top 100 Hospital for Overall Performance by Solucient®. By consistently achieving this status, St. Luke's is one of only 77 hospitals in the nation, and the only one in the St. Louis region, to be named a Top Benchmark Hospital. In addition, a national study ranked St. Luke's Spine Surgery and Pulmonary Care Centers as the best in the St. Louis area and has ranked its Cardiac Care center as one of the top 3 in the state. St. Luke's received 5-star ratings for the treatment of heart failure and for stroke care for the fifth consecutive year. St. Luke's has been recognized four out of five times (2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1999) for cardiovascular services and is the only St. Louis area hospital to make the list consistently.
