St. Luke's Birth Care Suites offer 24 private labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites. These spacious, comfortable suites accommodate women in a home-like atmosphere and permit them to stay in one room throughout their hospital stay. Each LDRP suite is furnished with a rocking chair, recliner and video cassette player.
Should a Cesarean birth become necessary, it is performed in the Obstetrical Unit Operating Room, located adjacent to the LDRP suites.
The baby's father or support person is encouraged to share in the birth of the baby. Other family members also may be present, depending on the mother's wishes and her doctor's approval. During the first hours following birth, the mother, father, and family members can actively participate in the newborn's care and feeding in the suite. Parents may request to watch their newborn receive his or her first bath.
As part of St. Luke's family-centered care, newborns may spend as much time in the suite as the mother wishes, unless medical conditions require otherwise. St. Luke's realizes that new mothers need time to rest and care for themselves. During these times, the newborn may be cared for in St. Luke's Well Baby Nursery.
St. Luke's nurses are always available to help the mother with self-care needs as well as to attend to the needs of her newborn and family. In the LDRP suites, arrangements can be made for fathers to stay overnight. Guest meal trays also are available. Parents should notify the staff if they wish to make these arrangements.
