The health and well being of both mother and child is the top priority at St. Luke's Hospital Birth Care Suites. Specialists and staff are available to care for women who have high-risk conditions or develop complications during pregnancy, childbirth or postpartum. In addition, St. Luke's Special Care Nursery, a Level II neonatal care unit, offers advanced care to newborns.
To assure that special needs are met, St. Luke's care team includes the mother's obstetrician, the baby's private pediatrician, an anesthesiologist, various specialists, registered nurses, dietitians, lactation consultants, social workers and chaplains of various faiths.
For MOTHER...
A specially trained registered nurse, along with the obstetrician, manages the mother's care throughout the labor process. In addition, an anesthesiologist and an obstetrician are available 24 hours a day.
Some women who deliver at St. Luke's have certain high-risk conditions prior to or during pregnancy. The term "high risk" is often given to women who are expecting twins or triplets, or who have medical conditions such as diabetes, chronic hypertension or asthma. St. Luke's perinatologists are available to help provide care for these medical conditions. These specialists use the latest treatments and technology, such as 3D/4D ultrasound, to diagnose and monitor high-risk conditions.
For BABY...
Babies who require specialized care may be admitted to St. Luke's Special Care Nursery. A neonatologist, pediatrician and neonatal nurse practitioner are available 24 hours a day. These specialists, along with the nursing staff, care for premature infants and babies with other special needs such as respiratory difficulties, congenital anomalies (heart defects, etc.), infection, low blood glucose levels, and the need for IV therapy. Admittance to St. Luke's Special Care Nursery is based upon doctor's orders.
All newborns are cared for in a safe and secure environment. Mother and baby are given special security IDs during their stay and access to the Well Baby and Special Care Nurseries is limited.
