Recognition based on outstanding clinical performance over seven-year period

St. Luke's Hospital has been recognized as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals by HealthGrades, the nation's leading independent healthcare ratings company.
The designation, which is new this year, recognizes hospitals that have demonstrated superior clinical quality over a seven-year time period, based upon an analysis of tens of millions of Medicare patient records from 1999-2005. These hospitals have achieved better survival rates and lower complication rates across dozens of medical procedures and diagnoses, from cardiac care to orthopedic surgery, consistently ranking among the top five percent in the nation for overall clinical outcomes.
"We've worked very hard to cultivate and nurture an environment focused on providing patients with the best quality care," said St. Luke's Hospital President and CEO Gary Olson. "This award recognizes the hard work our physicians, nurses, technicians, staff and volunteers have put into researching best practices and implementing evidence-based medicine."
St. Luke's Hospital is the only healthcare facility in a six state area (Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas) to be named one of America's 50 Best Hospitals.
"As a whole, in hospitals that qualified for the America's 50 Best Hospitals list, patients are 28 percent more likely to survive and five percent less likely to have a major complication according to HealthGrades," said Dr. Paul Mennes, Chief of Medicine at St. Luke's Hospital.
St. Luke's ranked among the top hospitals in the nation in several specialty areas. The hospital ranked among the top ten percent (or better) of hospitals in the nation for: strokes, pulmonary care, critical care services (including respiratory failure), and medical treatment of gastrointestinal issues. In addition to these top rankings, St. Luke's received five-star ratings for the treatment of heart failure and prostate surgery.
The recipients of HealthGrades America's 50 Best Hospitals were selected by identifying those hospitals that have also received the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical ExcellenceTM the most consecutive times from 2007 and previous years. While some hospitals receive the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical ExcellenceTM in one given year, St. Luke's Hospital is the only Missouri hospital to receive this prestigious national quality award from HealthGrades each year the award has been in existence (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007).
