St. Luke's Hospital was named one of the Best Places to Work in St. Louis by the St. Louis Business Journal for 2006. St. Luke's was the only hospital on the list and this is the fourth year we have been given this honor.
We were evaluated in several categories, including benefits, flexible work schedules and more. Our Customer Service Team, which is totally employee-driven, was specifically cited by the Business Journal as something that makes us unique among area employers.
"We truly try to get employees to generate their own ideas on what can be improved at the hospital," said Gary Olson, president and CEO. "We are all in this together."
Examples of these ideas that the Customer Service Team has generated includes our program that recognizes employees who have been here for 25, 30, 35 years or more. "They are very involved in how we thank our employees," said Janette Taaffe, Human Resources administrator. "The group has a lot of latitude, and Gary Olson encourages us to drive the ideas. If it's feasible, we'll pursue it."
Employees know that St. Luke's particularly likes to do spontaneous thank-yous, such as surprise breakfasts, and to hang plaques commemorating long-time staffers in areas where everyone can see them.
St. Luke's understands that a full and happy life has to include a healthy balance. Our SparkPeople and Passport to Wellness programs offer employees the chance to get and stay healthy. Our Biggest Loser program has been remarkably popular and, when paired with our health screenings and assessments, helps us all keep in good shape, both body and mind.
We understand that our employees want to grow as professionals and we encourage that endeavor wholeheartedly. St. Luke's tuition reimbursement program allows employees to further advance their knowledge and skills and we encourage anyone who might be interested to please take advantage of this important benefit.
One aspect of St. Luke's that cannot be measured by any scale is the sense of family here. We just recognized over 400 employees for their dedication to the hospital and that is only the tip of the iceberg. We pride ourselves on treating everyone with kindness, respect and dignity.
