Construction was recently completed at St. Luke's Hospital for its new state-of-the-art Electrophysiology (EP) Lab. The Lab is an expansion of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, located on the second floor of St. Luke's main hospital building. The construction of the lab is the first project in a long list of expansions and renovations taking place at St. Luke's over the next several years.
Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures associated with the heart's electrical system are performed in the EP Lab. These studies allow physicians to diagnose causes of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and determine treatment, which may include medications, pacemaker or defibrillator insertions, radiofrequency ablations and cardioversions.
"This is a very exciting time for St. Luke's," says Maged Haikal, MD, Chief of Cardiac Services at St. Luke's Hospital. "By adding the new service, patients will receive this specialized treatment without leaving our campus."
According to Dr. Haikal, the EP Lab expects to perform more than 150 procedures per year. In addition, the Lab's diagnostic and therapeutic procedures will be improved by the quality imaging characteristics of the flat-panel detectors, which eliminate the need for an image intensifier. Ultimately, the new technology system enables precision positioning at high stand speeds and features advanced X-ray tube technology and beam filtering techniques for excellent image quality and reduced radiation exposure.
Carey Fredman, MD, was recently named the Director of EP Services at St. Luke's Hospital. Dr. Fredman has had privileges as a cardiologist at St. Luke's for more than 10 years. His vast experience in cardiology and electrophysiology studies will be invaluable as he steps into this management role.
St. Luke's Hospital is a premier, regional healthcare provider, specializing in cardiac services, cancer services, neurosurgery and neurology, women's health, general medicine, outpatient services, pediatrics and comprehensive surgical services.
St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield is the only hospital in the St. Louis region to consistently be named among the nation's Top 100 Hospitals for both cardiovascular services and overall hospital performance (Solucient Health Care Database, February, 2005).
