What is Essure?
Essure is a non-incisional procedure for female permanent birth control that is an alternative to incisional tubal ligation. An Essure procedure does not require cutting or penetration of the abdomen and can be performed without general anesthesia. Essure is indicated for women who desire permanent birth control (female sterilization) by bilateral occlusion of the fallopian tubes and was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in November, 2002.
How is Essure used?
The Essure procedure deploys a soft micro-insert into the fallopian tube using a minimally invasive transcervical tubal access catheter. The patient has a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) 12 weeks post-placement to confirm satisfactory micro-insert location and tubal occlusion. During the period before this is verified, the patient must use another form of contraception.
How does Essure work?
Once in place, Essure is designed to elicit tissue growth in and around the micro-insert to form an occlusion in the fallopian tube.
What data are available on Essure?
Data from two clinical trials show that 99 percent of women who had the Essure procedure rated their long-term comfort with the micro-insert as 'good,' 'very good' or 'excellent'. Essure has a 99.8% effectiveness rate at two years of follow up.
Who manufactures Essure?
Essure was developed and is marketed by Conceptus Inc. (NASDAQ NM: CPTS). The Essure device is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, listed for sale with the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia, has received the CE Mark for commercial distribution in Europe, has received a device license from Health Canada and is available in Singapore.
