Katharine H. Mikulec, MD has joined the staff of St. Luke's Hospital and is the director of their new Osteoporosis Center. The Center, which opened on Monday, June 20, focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Dr. Mikulec will focus on metabolic bone diseases and mineral disorders, vitamin D deficiency, osteomalacia, hyperparathydroidism and Paget's disease.
Osteoporosis is a major public health problem with an estimated 10 million Americans currently living with the condition. Osteoporosis is responsible for about 1.5 million bone fractures per year. While often thought of as a woman's disease, nearly 25 per cent of men over the age of 50 will experience a bone fracture due to osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a "silent" condition, often with patients experiencing no symptoms until a bone fracture occurs. Although generally under-diagnosed and therefore under-treated, bone mineral density testing can identify individuals at risk for bone fracture and effective treatments are available which can reduce fractures by as much as 50 percent.
The Osteoporosis Center at St. Luke's Hospital features bone mineral density testing, vertebral fracture assessment (image of spine performed on bone densitometer used to detect "silent" vertebral fractures) patient consultation and referring physician follow up with Dr. Mikulec.
