St. Luke's Hospital Designated a Top 100 Hospital for Cardiovascular Services

Only Hospital in Missouri to be Granted Designation Four Consecutive Years

Modern Healthcare has announced St. Luke's Hospital has met the criteria necessary to be designated as a Top 100 Hospital for Cardiovascular services. This is the fifth time in six years St. Luke's has won the award, and the only hospital to be given the Top 100 designation for Cardiovascular services in the
St. Louis region four consecutive years.
  • This is the 6th year for the Cardiovascular Benchmark study. St. Luke's has received the award five of the six years (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004).

  • The study "identifies hospitals that are setting benchmark levels of performance for cardiovascular services throughout the nation," according to Jean Chenoweth, Executive Director of Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals Program.

  • Study findings are based on Solucient's hospital database and the publicly available Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data set. More than 6,000 hospitals and more than 12 million patient discharges nationwide were reviewed.

  • Solucient focused on hospitals that treat a broad spectrum of cardiology patients, including those undergoing: acute myocardial infarction (AMI), congestive heart failure (CHF), percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG).

  • Performance Measures and Scoring include seven areas of clinical quality practices and efficiency of operations:
    1. Procedure Volume Threshold
    2. Risk-adjusted Medical Mortality (includes risk adjusted AMI patient mortality index and risk-adjusted CHF patient mortality index)
    3. Risk-adjusted Surgical Mortality (includes risk-adjusted CABG patient mortality index and risk-adjusted PTCA patient mortality index)
    4. Risk-adjusted Complications Index (includes post-operative hemorrhages and post operative infections)
    5. Percentages of CABG Patients with Internal Mammary Artery Use
    6. Severity-Adjusted Average Length of Stay
    7. Wage- and Severity-Adjusted Average Cost
"Once again, we are honored to be recognized as a Top 100 Hospital for Cardiovascular care," says Gary Olson, president and Chief Executive Officer of St. Luke's Hospital. "The award reinforces that everyone at St. Luke's, from physicians and nurses to clinical support staff and volunteers, is committed to the highest standard of performance."

St. Luke's Hospital also is honored to be the only St. Louis area hospital recognized as a "Benchmark" hospital, having received the Top 100 Hospitals for Overall Performance designation four times within six years. That designation was announced in August 2004.
