St. Luke's Hospital Named among 100 Top Hospitals Overall

If overall performance in all acute care U.S. hospitals were the same as the nation's top 100 hospitals, close to 57,000 more patients could survive each year and nearly $9.5 billion in annual expenses could be saved.

St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri is one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation according to a study released by Solucient: 100 Top Hospitals® National Benchmarks for Success. The annual study published in Modern Healthcare identifies industry benchmarks by recognizing hospitals and their management teams that demonstrate superior clinical, operational, and financial performance. St. Luke's is the only hospital in the St. Louis area to be ranked among the Top 100 Hospitals.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for St. Luke's Hospital, our medical staff, employees and volunteers," said Gary Olson, president and chief executive officer, St. Luke's Hospital.

"Winners of the 100 Top award bring increasingly better services to their patients and provide great value to their communities, despite the growing pressures of an aging population and tighter reimbursements," said Jean Chenoweth, executive director of Solucient's 100 Top Hospital program.

By identifying hospitals that provide high-quality care, operate efficiently, and produce superior results, the Solucient study offers the health care industry a direction for positive change. If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those in the 100 top hospitals:
  • An additional 57,000 patients could survive each year.
  • More than 150,000 patient complications would be avoided annually.
  • Expenses would decline by an aggregate $9.5 billion a year.
If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.

The ninth 100 Top Hospitals Benchmarks for Success study analyzed acute care hospitals nationwide using detailed empirical performance data from 1999 and 2000, including publicly available Medicare MEDPAR data and Medicare cost reports. The study scored facilities according to key measures: risk-adjusted mortality and risk-adjusted complications, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, percent of outpatient revenue, total asset turnover and data quality.
