St. Luke's Hospital Named One of the Nation's Top 100

Chesterfield Hospital Only in St. Louis Area to Make the List

February 28, 2006 - St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® by Evanston, Ill.-based Solucient®.

The award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in quality of care, operational efficiency, financial performance and adaptation to the environment. This is the sixth time in ten years St. Luke's Hospital has been recognized with this honor, making it the only hospital in Missouri to achieve this designation six times or more - a claim only 34 hospitals nationwide can make.

The 13th edition of Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks for Success study appears in the February 27 issue of Modern Healthcare magazine.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment for St. Luke's," said Gary Olson, president and chief executive officer, St. Luke's Hospital. "It is not by accident that St. Luke's consistently receives this recognition among the nation's top hospitals. Our medical staff, employees and volunteers work diligently to ensure our patients' needs are addressed in a safe, efficient and comforting environment. This award recognizes our organizational focus and shows our patients are the ones who benefit most from this effort."

According to the study, if all acute care hospitals performed at the same level as the nation's benchmark hospitals, such as St. Luke's, as many as 106,312 more Medicare patients could survive and an additional 117,000 patient stays could be complication-free each year - at an estimated annual savings of $7.6 billion.

"The 100 Top Hospital award winners continue to demonstrate significant distinctions in the provision of value to their communities, as shown by objective differences in clinical outcomes, patient safety, efficient operations and financial stability," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president of Solucient's Center for Healthcare Improvement, which is responsible for the 100 Top Hospitals program.

Other key findings of the study include:
  • Survival rates were higher at benchmark hospitals (96.9 percent) compared to the typical peer hospital (96.2 percent), translating into tens of thousands of lives saved.
  • The 100 Top Hospitals treated sicker patients requiring more complex treatment, yet had better patient outcomes and lower costs.
This award accompanies other national recognition for St. Luke's Hospital, including: recognition as a 100 Top Hospital for Cardiovascular Services; designation as one of 77 Top Benchmark Hospitals; and ranking fifth among the nation's top fertility centers. Locally,

St. Luke's has been named three times by the St. Louis Business Journal as one of the Best Places to Work.
