Assessing Residents' Progress

Assessment of a resident's progress is based on monthly evaluations submitted to the Program Director by the faculty. Other considerations in determination of decisions regarding promotion include Clinical Evaluation Exercise, quality and timely completion of medical records, attendance and participation in conferences, performance in the ambulatory area, documentation and completion of technical procedures, performance on tests, and scholarly activities.

Demonstration of scholarly activity is an important component of training. We expect residents to become good readers of the medical literature. Facility in searching medical literature on the computer is essential. Each PGY-3 is expected to present a Clinico-Pathological discussion of an unknown case they are given.

All residents are encouraged to identify a topic suitable for presentation in abstract form to the Associate's Poster Competition of the American College of Physicians - American Society of Internal Medicine. We are proud of our residents' performance in this annual event over the past decade. Each year St. Luke's resident's have been winners in this competition, which takes place in the Lake of the Ozarks. In 1998 we received all three awards for first, second and third in the Clinical category. Also, in 1998, one of our resident's received a first place award at the National ACP-ASIM competition. In 2000, we received first and third in the Research category, and in 2001 we received another first place in the Clinical category (which went on to win first place nationally). In 2002, we received second place in the Clinical category.
