Palliative care helps comfort patients
St. Luke's Palliative Care Team ensures the highest quality of life for cancer patients and families coping with potentially life-limiting illness. The team includes a specially-trained physician, a nurse, a social worker and a chaplain.

Palliative Care Helps:
  • Those who have been diagnosed with a chronic disease or serious illness
  • Integrate psychological, spiritual and social support for patients and families
  • Incorporate patient's goals of care across the continuum, providing coordination between inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Enhance patient well-being by relieving suffering through symptom control and other measures to enhance quality of life
  • Maximize use of community resources to support the family
  • Use appropriate resources that support patient and family goals
The benefits go beyond just providing a service. New studies suggest certain cancer patients who receive this patient-centered care upon diagnosis live longer, healthier and happier lives. So, for us, palliative care is much more than a standard of care. It is a reflection of our mission to provide a substantial difference in the quality of life for our patients.

"Our roles as caregivers in palliative care go beyond a simple job description," says Peggy Kurlandski, nurse coordinator. "We are much more to our patients. We not only help administer medications, but we provide other physical and psychological support that may be needed for both the patient and the family. It's a commitment we take great pride in."
