Letter from Dr. Van Amburg At a Glance Focus On: Survivors Statistical Overview Primary Site Analysis Community Involvement Early Detection and Prevention 2007 Oncology Peer Review Committee Ex-Officio Department Representation Back to Main Site		Letter from Dr. Van Amburg On behalf of St. Luke's Center for Cancer Care, I am pleased to present the 2007 Annual Report. The following overview represents the efforts of the many disciplines involved in cancer care and reflects the ongoing multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients at St. Luke's. I would also like to take this time to thank our dedicated staff. Without their efforts, we would not be able to provide the level of care and support that we have achieved. As part of our ongoing commitment to patient care, the Center for Cancer Care has continued to focus on enhancing the patient experience. Just recently, St. Luke's urologists began using the hospital's newly purchased da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system to perform complex, minimally invasive surgery on prostate cancer patients. With this state-of-the-art technology, the surgeon's hand movements are scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements by micro-instruments within the operative site. The new system will offer St. Luke's patients important benefits, including shorter hospital stays, less pain and risk of infection, less scarring and faster recovery. St. Luke's is taking another quantum leap forward with the implementation of a comprehensive, completely integrated electronic medical record (EMR) for cancer patients. The system will encompass both medical and radiation oncology as well as support services. The overall goal is to create a completely paperless cancer program with one system controlling and coordinating all aspects of the patients care - from scheduling through treatment. This system will also be integrated into the hospital tumor registry program as well as managing the oncology-based clinical trial programs. This new advanced oncology EMR will allow our physicians and staff to spend more time with patients and improve the quality of our care. I congratulate the medical staff, nurses and cancer registry staff on their accomplishments over the past year including our continued recognition from the Commission on Cancer (COC) as an approved cancer program. Their collaborative efforts promote improved data reporting and patient care at St. Luke's, which is reflected in the advancements of our cancer program.
