What does participating in a clinical trial involve?
A study can last for a few weeks up to a couple of years. First, you are carefully educated about the drug being tested, with comprehensive descriptions of the potential benefits and side effects. If you give your consent, the screening process begins during which test are performed to determine whether you are eligible to participate. If eligible, you are then entered into the study. Once entered into a clinical trial, you are typically randomized to receive the study medication, often in different dosages, or a placebo. You and your doctors often don't know which drug or dosage you are actually receiving. Follow up visits at varying intervals are then scheduled to monitor your progress and assess for any side effects.
