What is an Upper Gastrointestinal study?
An Upper GI is an examination of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum.
What are the uses of an Upper GI?
The purpose of the Upper GI is to study the form and function of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, as well as to detect abnormal anatomical and functional conditions. Some of the more common abnormalities seen are peptic ulcers, hiatal hernias, acute or chronic gastritis, carcinomas and benign lesions such as polyps or diverticulae.
Is there any special preparation?
Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the procedure is to be
performed.
What is involved in the procedure?
Under direct supervision by the radiologist, you will be asked to drink barium. He will then be able to evaluate the structure of the anatomy of the upper gastrointestinal tract. After the initial examination by the radiologist, the x-ray technologist will then obtain further views of the stomach.
