Insomnia refers to difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep or a problem with non-refreshing sleep. Insomnia can result from many conditions and may involve more than a single factor. Some common causes are chronic medical illness (i.e. arthritis, lung disease, restless legs); psychological conditions (i.e. stress, depression); medications; life-style habits; and sleep-wake schedule disturbances (i.e. shift work). Persons with insomnia are usually tired or sleepy, lack energy, have poor concentration and other unpleasant consequences of poor sleep. Successful treatment depends on a thorough evaluation of the contributing factors.
