Lymphedema is a chronic disorder of the lymphatic system, characterized by an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid that causes swelling, most often in the arms and legs. Lymphedema commonly follows surgical procedures where there has been removal or damage to the lymph nodes and vessels, which block the flow of fluid. Lymphedema can occur soon after surgery or several years later with a sudden or gradual onset. St. Luke's Therapy Services offers supportive treatment to reduce swelling in order to preserve or restore function. Treatment includes the following:
- manual lymph drainage, which is a specialized massage technique to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid,
- compression bandaging on the affected extremity,
- remedial exercise,
- meticulous skin care and
- education to the patient.
