Albert Pujols Wellness Center for Adults with Down Syndrome
The Center is now taking appointments.
The Albert Pujols Wellness Center for Adults with Down Syndrome is the first of its kind in the area and will help fill a growing need for wellness services for adults with Down syndrome.
Patients 17 years of age or older will access the Center by making an initial appointment. After a physician visit for a comprehensive physical, patients will be referred to various services focused on nutrition, exercise, safety and social/emotional well-being. These services are specifically designed for adult Down syndrome patients. The Center will also offer caregiver classes on various topics for patients' caregivers to attend. This service will complement the patients' regular visits with their primary care physician for other medical issues.
Nutrition
Nutrition coaching, provided by registered dietitians, encompasses everything from health and wellness to disease management. Our dietitians will work with each patient to develop personalized nutrition goals based on medical history, developmental needs and personal challenges. A variety of nutrition programs will be offered in the group setting including:
- Healthy Food Choices
- Portion Distortion
- Dining Out
- Healthy Weight Strategies
Individual sessions are available to address each patient's unique nutritional needs.
Exercise Therapy
Patients will enjoy the benefits of improved fitness and muscular strength through a well supervised program designed by a physical therapist and fitness trainer. The Center offers individual evaluations followed by group sessions that include warm-up activities set to music, cardio, exercise stations and group dance activities.
Social Services
Patients and family members meet with a social worker to complete a psychosocial assessment to identify individual wellness, social, educational and planning needs. Consultation, supportive counseling, information sharing and referral to community resources and advocacy groups are provided by the social worker to promote ongoing wellness, socialization and education.
The Albert Pujols Wellness Center for Adults with Down Syndrome is located at the
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore P. Desloge, Jr. Outpatient Center, located directly across from the hospital on the west side of Highway 141.
