The Center for Cancer Care at St. Luke's Hospital, West County's first community-based cancer center, was unveiled on November 12, 2002, during the dedication of St. Luke's East Medical Building.
St. Luke's Center for Cancer Care, a center without walls, combines pre-existing services into one location to better serve patients. These services include the Cancer & Health Information Center, Infusion Services, Laboratory Draw Station, Nuclear Medicine, the Breast Care Center, and the medical offices of St. Louis Cancer Care among other medical oncology offices.
By centralizing our cancer services and offering the latest technology, we are able to provide exceptional care to our patients.
In January, St. Luke's acquired the ImageChecker®, the only FDA-approved Computer Aided Detection System for breast imaging. The first of its kind in St. Louis, the ImageChecker® helps to ensure accurate readings of screening and diagnostic mammograms. In February, St. Luke's purchased an IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) for use in radiation oncology. The IMRT enables doctors to pinpoint and treat the tumor, sparing healthy tissue and reducing side effects.
"This new equipment exemplifies St. Luke's commitment to stay on the forefront of cancer detection and treatment," said Karen Lenz, director of business planning and cancer services, St. Luke's Hospital.
The 70-thousand square-foot East Medical Building and adjoining parking facility will increase accessibility to St. Luke's Center for Cancer Care and the other outpatient services located in the building. The East Medical Building also houses the Women's Outpatient Diagnostic Center, Mammography Services, the G.I. Lab, and physician offices.
