20th Anniversary Celebration
Modern Healthcare magazine has announced St. Luke's Hospital has met the criteria necessary to be designated as a Solucient® Top 100 Hospital for Cardiovascular services. St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield is the only Hospital in the St. Louis area to be given the Top 100 designation for Cardiovascular services four consecutive years.
This month St. Luke's also celebrates the Cardiothoracic surgery program's 20th year of service. In 1984, St. Luke's Cardiothoracic Surgery team performed the first coronary artery bypass on Thomas Gentry.
Prior to surgery, Gentry was experiencing a lack of energy. His primary care physician recognized he was not receiving sufficient oxygen to his heart and referred him to St. Luke's Hospital.
"My physician referred me to St. Luke's because of their outstanding reputation in the field of cardiothoracic surgery," said Gentry.
The surgeons at St. Luke's Hospital are distinguished by their extensive experience in coronary bypass surgery; valvular repair and replacement; aortic and left-ventricular aneurysm surgery and successful outcomes.
"St. Luke's is one of the premier hospitals in cardiac care with a team of four cardiothoracic surgeons, all board certified and trained at different institutions in the United States. This extensive and diverse training empowers us to provide optimal care with the most up-to-date technology," commented Ronald Leidenfrost, MD, FACS, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Luke's Hospital.
St. Luke's cardiothoracic surgeons have a collective cardiac surgical work experience of more than 75 years. Today the surgeons and staff perform more than 1,200 cardiothoracic procedures per year.
Today Thomas Gentry is very active, enjoying retirement, gardening and spending time with his wife, two sons, three daughters and 14 grandchildren.
