Breastfeeding provides your baby with a strong nutritional start and helps with emotional development. Breast milk is an easily digested, perfectly matched nutrition source filled with antibodies that protect against infection. Breastfeeding also promotes bonding and contributes to a special, loving relationship with your newborn.
Some mothers find breastfeeding more difficult than they expected, however most difficulties can be overcome with instruction and guidance.
The Lactation Center at St. Luke's Hospital is a resource for all mothers who choose to breastfeed. Staffed by certified lactation consultants, the Center provides education and support for a successful breastfeeding experience. The Center's lactation consultants are available to provide one-on-one care for mothers during their hospital stay. The Center also offers a variety of services for before and after childbirth.
Private Consultations
Private consultations at the Center are available. A private consultation is recommended for mothers who:
- Want individual instruction on positioning and other techniques
- Experience continued soreness after following suggested remedies
- Have an infant who is not gaining weight or is having trouble latching on
There is a charge of $45 per hour for private consultations. St. Luke's will provide you with a form you may submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
For bra fittings or private consultations, please call 314-205-6378 to schedule an appointment.
Breastfeeding Class
The Lactation Center at St. Luke's offers monthly breastfeeding classes for expectant mothers. The class reviews breastfeeding techniques and is ideal for new mothers or as a refresher course. Participants learn how to recognize, manage and prevent potential problems that may arise during breastfeeding. For a complete listing of classes, please click here or call 314-205-6906 for more information.
The La Leche League of Chesterfield-West County meets at St. Luke's hospital on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the East Medical Office Building.
Balancing Act
This class offers support for women who continue breastfeeding after going back to work or becoming more active. This class includes video, group discussion and practice using breast pumps. CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED. HUSBANDS OR SIGNIFICANT OTHERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND. For more information or to register please click here.
Telephone Consultations
Occasionally, questions about breastfeeding will arise after leaving the hospital or while applying the techniques learned in class. St. Luke's lactation consultants are available by phone to answer these questions. If a problem seems too complex for telephone counseling, the consultant may suggest a visit to the Center.
Contact Information
The Lactation Center is staffed by a certified lactation consultant from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
