Letter from Dr. Van Amburg
Dear Friends:

It is my pleasure to share with you the 2006 annual report for St. Luke's Center for Cancer Care. As you may already know, our commitment to providing the best possible care to the patients we serve has already contributed to some very promising numbers in the overall fight against cancer.

In a recent report from the American Cancer Society, the number of cancer deaths in the United States declined by 3,014 from 2003 to 2004. This marked the first decline in the number of cancer deaths in the more than 70 years. This is the second year in a row that we have seen improvement, reaffirming our mission to provide each patient the individualized care they need while increasing their chances of survival.

Our Center is continuously looking for new technologies, procedures, treatments and clinical trials that will foster the best possible outcomes for our patients. The latest example is the addition of the Trilogy Stereotactic System. This cutting-edge technology will enable us to provide patients the most advanced medical linear accelerator system on the market. Technologies such as this combined with our experienced medical personnel - physicians, nurses, educators, counselors, dietitians and case managers - allow
St. Luke's to provide the best possible care for cancer patients in the region.

We also continue to provide the most accurate and current information on early cancer detection, cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, coping techniques, support groups and resources through the Health and Cancer Education Center. While these programs currently help thousands of patients and their families, we are always looking for ways to expand our outreach efforts and look forward to introducing new programs in the future.

The following report details our comprehensive and multi-disciplinary approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and provides a glimpse into the dedication and passion of our medical staff. It is because of them and the determination of the patients we serve that I look forward to reporting even more promising numbers in the years ahead.
