Lymphedema

St. Luke's offers supportive treatment to reduce lymphedema in order to preserve or restore function. Lymphedema is a chronic disorder of the lymphatic system characterized by an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid that causes swelling, most often in the arms and legs. Lymphedema commonly follows surgical procedures that involve removal of or damage to the lymph nodes and vessels, which blocks the flow of fluid.

Treatment includes:
  • Manual lymph drainage (a specialized massage technique to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid)
  • Compression bandaging
  • Remedial exercise
  • Skin care
  • Patient education
