St. Luke's Hospital 2013 Healthy Woman Award

Chesterfield, Mo., November 15, 2013 - St. Luke's Hospital congratulates the four 2013 Healthy Woman Award honorees: Susan Bruno, Laurel Hecht, Lucy Hey and Lauren Wilmore.

The ninth annual St. Luke's Hospital Healthy Woman Award recognizes and celebrates women who not only take steps to improve their own health but who also inspire better health in the community. Whether she motivates others through her own actions, empowers others to pursue better health or devotes herself to making our community a healthier and safer place to live, a St. Luke's Hospital Healthy Woman Award honoree improves the quality of life in our community.

The honorees were recognized at the St. Luke's Hospital Spirit Girls' Night Out on October 24.

Susan Bruno: Susan lived for years with a secret. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2002, but Susan didn't want anyone to know. She wanted to maintain her career and didn't want to be a burden to family and colleagues. Being proactive about her health had not been a top priority until her diagnosis. She has since shared her story and went from volunteering at Bike MS to actually riding in it with her husband on their tandem bicycle. Now Susan does all she can to use her own experience to help others who are living with MS, and she was designated as a Bike MS Champion for 2013.

Laurel Hecht: Laurel is committed to living a healthy lifestyle, both on the job at the Chesterfield Athletic Club where she is the director and off the job as a runner and cyclist. Laurel supports her "Club family" and goes the extra mile, such as hosting an annual 5K at the club in memory of a coworker's son. She seeks opportunities to spread the word about fitness in the community and brings new ideas to the club community to keep members engaged in new workouts.

Lucy Hey: Lucy rededicated herself to an active lifestyle that led her to compete and win in her age group in local 5K runs and spring triathlons. She also became a certified kickboxing instructor. She brings her fitness mission to her workplace at The Boeing Company where she is a team leader for the Boeing On the Move program, providing weekly workout and nutrition tips to coworkers. She also encourages daily lunch walks and at-the-desk workouts. Her commitment to fitness is evident to all who know her, and it defines her core values. Many people at the fitness center where she works out seek her advice on their own fitness programs.

Lauren Wilmore: Lauren teaches salsa and maintains regular exercise through dance. She has participated in community dance events through her past position at Dance St. Louis and has led hundreds of women through dance routines at the St. Luke's Hospital Day of Dance each February. Lauren co-founded a nonprofit group called St. Louis Dancing Classrooms to help bring ballroom dance programs to schools to encourage positive physical and emotional health for children. Lauren's enthusiasm is truly contagious.
