St. Luke's Hospital: The Only Missouri Hospital Named One of America's 50 Best For Sixth Consecutive Year

The HealthGrades America's 50 Best Hospitals list includes hospitals which rank among the top one percent in the nation for clinical excellence.

CHESTERFIELD, MO, March 20, 2012 - St. Luke's Hospital is the only Missouri hospital to be named one of America's 50 Best Hospitals this year by HealthGrades. This is the sixth year in a row that St. Luke's has achieved this designation, and it is the only Missouri hospital to be named one of America's 50 Best Hospitals since the inception of the list.

As one of America's 50 Best Hospitals, St. Luke's ranks among the top one percent of hospitals in the nation for clinical excellence based on survival and complication rates. According to HealthGrades, patients admitted to an America's 50 Best Hospital are more likely to have successful treatment without major complications.

"We are honored to receive this recognition for the sixth year in a row because of what it means for our patients," said Gary Olson, St. Luke's Hospital president and chief executive officer. "It is a reflection of our healthcare team's ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for each patient."

HealthGrades is an independent healthcare ratings organization. To determine America's 50 Best Hospitals, HealthGrades analyzed millions of Medicare patient records from 1998 through 2010 for 26 common medical procedures and conditions, from the treatment of heart attack to knee replacement surgery. The data is risk adjusted, which takes into account differing levels of severity of patient illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared equally. HealthGrades rates each of the nation's nearly 5,000 non-government hospitals. Hospitals cannot opt out of this analysis.

In October, another report published by HealthGrades ranked St. Luke's Hospital number one in Missouri for cardiac services and neurosurgery. The study also named St. Luke's number one in the state for neurosciences (neurosurgery and stroke treatment combined), critical care and gastrointestinal medical treatment.

St. Luke's is also the recipient of the HealthGrades Emergency Medicine Excellence Award (2011 and 2012), Pulmonary Care Excellence Award (2005-2012), Women's Health Excellence Award (2009-2011) and Outstanding Patient Experience Award (2011).
