Healthgrades Names St. Luke's Hospital One of America's 50 Best Hospitals for Ninth Year

St. Luke's is the only St. Louis hospital to be recognized as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals since the inception of the list.

Chesterfield, Mo., February 24, 2015 - St. Luke's Hospital has been named one of the 2015 America's 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades for consistent patient care excellence. This is the ninth year in a row (2007-2015) that St. Luke's has achieved this recognition, and St. Luke's is the only St. Louis hospital to be named one of America's 50 Best Hospitals since the inception of the list.

As one of America's 50 Best Hospitals, St. Luke's is recognized among the top one percent of hospitals in the nation for clinical excellence based on survival and complication rates. According to Healthgrades, patients admitted to America's 50 Best Hospitals are more likely to have successful treatment without major complications.

"We are grateful for this honor, and the secret behind how we've achieved it for nine consecutive years is very simple," said Jan Hess, St. Luke's Hospital vice president of quality. "Every day, St. Luke's entire healthcare team is focused on providing the best care possible for each patient. This commitment helps us fulfill our mission to improve the quality of life for our patients and the community."

Healthgrades is an independent healthcare ratings organization. It annually rates each of the nation's more than 4,500 non-government hospitals that treat Medicare patients. Its website, Healthgrades.com, offers comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

To determine America's 50 Best Hospitals, Healthgrades analyzed millions of Medicare patient records from 2011 through 2013 for common inpatient medical procedures and conditions. Hospitals cannot opt out of this analysis, and no hospital pays to be evaluated. In addition, the data is risk adjusted, which takes into account differing levels of severity of patient illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared equally.

"The Healthgrades analysis shows that not all hospitals perform equally, so it is important that consumers do their homework when selecting a hospital," said Evan Marks, Healthgrades chief strategy officer. "Those hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades distinction have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional clinical quality care over an extended period of time."

According to another 2015 Healthgrades report, St. Luke's is among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for cardiology services (2012-2015), pulmonary services (2003-2015), neurosurgery (2012-2015) and gastrointestinal medical treatment (2010-2015).

St. Luke's is also a recipient of the Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award (2011-2014) and the Women's Health Excellence Award (2009-2014).
