St. Luke's Hospital Rated Best in Missouri for Pulmonary Services

National study gives St. Luke's five-star ratings in several additional specialties.

CHESTERFIELD, MO, October 14, 2008 - The 11th Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study ranked St. Luke's Hospital among the top performers in a wide variety of clinical specialties.

For the second year in a row, the Chesterfield hospital is rated best in Missouri for pulmonary services, such as treatment of pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The study was conducted by HealthGrades, a leading independent healthcare ratings organization, and it focused on hospital survival and complication rates. HealthGrades analyzed more than 41 million Medicare hospitalization records from 2005 to 2007 at the nation's approximately 5,000 non-federal hospitals.

Earlier this year, St. Luke's was named one of America's 50 Best Hospitals by HealthGrades for the second consecutive year. It is the only healthcare facility in Missouri to receive this distinction.

"We're proud to continue to receive recognition for our ongoing commitment to patient safety and quality care," said Gary Olson, St. Luke's Hospital president and chief executive officer. "These ratings are a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our physicians, nurses, technicians, staff and volunteers."

Today, HealthGrades made available its 2009 quality ratings at www.healthgrades.com , a Web site designed to help patients research and compare local healthcare providers. Hospitals with outcomes that are above average to a statistically significant degree receive a five-star rating. Hospitals with average outcomes receive a three-star rating, and hospitals with outcomes that are below average receive a one-star rating.
