Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)

St. Luke's offers a program for individuals with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). POTS is a common autonomic nervous system condition most commonly characterized by your heart rate rising significantly with position changes. Position changes can include moving from laying down to sitting as well as moving from sitting to standing. This increase in heart rate makes standing tasks more difficult. Our team of experienced therapists will work with you one on one to help manage your symptoms to improve quality of life.

Common symptoms of POTS include:

  • Lightheadedness upon standing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Decreased concentration
  • Exercise intolerance

Treatment includes:

  • Endurance training using real time heart rate monitors
  • Individualized strength training
  • Stretching program
  • Fatigue coping mechanisms
  • Decreased concentration management
