Benign prostatic hypertrophy is a benign (non-cancerous) condition in which an overgrowth of prostate tissue pushes against the urethra and the bladder, blocking the flow of urine. BPH is a very common condition that affects men as they age. About 50% of men between the ages of 51 and 60 have BPH. That number jumps to 70% among men aged 60 to 69 and to around 80% of men over 70. Treatment includes lifestyle changes, medications, laser therapy, and outpatient procedures like prostatic urethral lift (UroLift).
