Meet Your WATCHMAN Physician

J. Mauricio Sanchez, MD, FHRS
J. Mauricio Sanchez, MD, FHRS, is board certified in cardiovascular disease, cardiovascular electrophysiology and internal medicine. He is a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society and the American College of Cardiology.

Following graduation from Vanderbilt University as a Chancellor Scholar, Dr. Sanchez received a medical degree from The University of South Florida College of Medicine in 2000, where he earned the Academic Excellence Award, the Internal Medicine Award, and the Semmelweis Award, and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

He completed his internship, residency, cardiology fellowship and electrophysiology fellowship at Barnes Hospital – Washington University School of Medicine. He was awarded the Rising Star Award in Cardiovascular Research by Washington University School of Medicine and The Clinical Scientist Training & Research Program award, and was an American College of Physicians Research Poster Competition and American Heart Association Laennec Society Young Clinician Finalist. He has authored numerous articles and abstracts in medical journals, and has testified as an expert to the FDA regarding the Watchman left atrial appendage occluder device. Dr. Sanchez has been elected a St. Louis Best Doctor annually since 2009.

Dr. Sanchez' interests include atrial fibrillation and complex ablation for ventricular tachycardia and stroke prevention without anticoagulation using left atrial appendage occluder devices.

J. Mauricio Sanchez, MD, FHRS, St. Luke's Hospital left atrial appendage closure program director, successfully performed the first commercial WATCHMAN FLX procedure in the St. Louis area on Nov. 9, 2020.

St. Luke's Hospital is the first healthcare network in the St. Louis region to perform a commercial implant of the newly FDA-approved WATCHMAN FLX™ device.
This next generation permanent heart implant is a catheter-based, non-surgically delivered device designed to close the left atrial appendage. The procedure works to increase safety by reducing the risk of stroke in certain patients with atrial fibrillation.
